Soft cover. Condition: Good. No Jacket. A UNIVERSAL HISTORY OF INFAMY, Jorge Luis Borges, softcover, 1975. ITEM CONDITION: good. The text block is in very good condition with no tears, dog-ears, or marks. The pages are age-toned. There is no bookplate nor signature of a prior owner. This is not a library book nor a remainder. The wraps are in good condition (some edge wear, curled righthand corner). 7 x 4 ½, 137 pages, 10 ounces XX [From the back cover] A Universal History of Infamy, the first of Borges's four volumes of short stories, was originally written for publication in an Argentine newspaper of the 1930s. In it, as well as chronicling the lives of such famous villains as Billy the Kid and the Tichborne Claimant (and little-known rascals like Kotsuke no Suke and the Widow Ching), Borges perpetrates a hoax or two, a technique for which he later won acclaim, by inventing stories and ascribing them to other authors. The book includes the popular Streetcorner Man, Borges's very first short story, and a final selection of brief tales in which human villainy becomes the victim of fate, enchantment or its own perversity. As Borges conceived it, A Universal History was to be no more than light entertainment. Yet after the book appeared in 1935 its influence on the fiction of Latin America was so profound that its publication date has become a landmark in the history of Latin American literature.
