The author, Desmond Scott, had accumulated about two years of operational flying in Hawker Hurricanes before the Hawker Typhoon started to be deployed to squadrons on the South Coast of England, at first mainly to counter German low-level fighter-bomber attacks on the South Coast and against allied shipping in the English Channel. (Despite known aerodynamic problems which nearly caused the aircraft to be cancelled, the Typhoon performed very well at heights below 10,000' and it was therefore useful for certain specific roles.) Apart from countering low level raids on English coastal targets, Typhoons escorted bombers to the Continent and also flew cover for Royal Naval Coastal Forces: motor torpedo boats and motor gunboats operating near the enemy coast, where German fighters were certain to attack. After an awesome gaffe whilst working at 11 Group's headquarters, the Author was given command of a Typhoon squadron doing such work and he was subsequently promoted to command of a whole wing of Typhoons (later including Tempests) with 84 Group, part of the 2nd tactical airforce which was to support the invasion of NAZI-occupied Europe, mostly by attacking ground targets. Hardcover. Condition: Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. 1st Edition. Typhoon Pilot by Grp Cpt Desmond Scott, DSO, OBE, DFC. Publisher: Leo Cooper/Secker & Warburg 1983, First Edition, second printing. Good hardback with jacket. Green boards have a little bumping to edges. Name details on ffep. Pages are tanned. Jacket is a little creased and chipped at edges with some fading to spine, minor marks. 168 pages with photos. Group Captain Desmond James Scott, born in Ashburton, was a New Zealand fighter pilot and flying ace of the Second World War. He gained his licence as a private pilot in 1939 and was automatically enlisted in the RNZAF in September of that year. Arriving in Britain in September 1940, Scott was attached to the Royal Air Force and flew in operations over Europe, rising through the ranks to become the RNZAF's youngest group captain of the war. This is not only the story of one man's war, but of an aircraft - the Typhoon, or "Tiffy" as it was affectionately known - which the author describes as a "low-bred carthorse whose pedigree had received a sharp infusion of hot-headed sprinter's blood". He recounts his time as a young commander of a rumbustious New Zealand Air Force squadron, and later as the RAF's youngest Group Captain at the age of 25. His story includes conflict in the air over Normandy, Belgium, Holland and Germany, where the Typhoons fought their last actions and where Desmond Scott earned major decorations from Belgium, France and Holland.
