Store Stamped. --- --- THE NORTH AFRICAN DESERT: WORLD WAR II. . . . .Their officers called them a stinking, lazy, drunken rabble and their friends said they took the colonel prisoner, burnt down their officers' mess and drove off the military police with heavy rifle-fire. This is the unforgettable story of the gallant men of the A.I.F.: the fearless and fatalistic Diggers of the Western Desert. . . . .Twenty thousand men were on their way to the deserts of Egypt and Libya: some had joined up for adventure, some were on the run from the police, for others, the army meant three meals a day and a bed to sleep in. . . . .From an induction camp in Australia to the siege of Tobruk, the savage intensity of Second X Battalion's experiences is not for the faint hearted. How soon will death silence so many of these brave voices and how many will ring out beyond the brutality of the battlefield? . . .See photos for additional content. . .

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. Reissued. in original hardcover binding, with colour illustrated dustwrapper. This is a novel about Australian soldiers in the Second World War. There was no such battalion as the Second X; I have tried to make its members typical of many Australian infantrymen. Therefore the main characters depicted herein are composite's of many men. To say that they have now relation to living persons nevertheless would be true -- for the men on whom I chose to base them are dead. -- author's note the dust jacket has faded slightly on the spine section, and there is a 0.5 inch tear at the top left of the front panel and a 1.5 inch tear at the top of the front fold over crease. There is the remnants of a price sticker at the top of the front free end page. Slight darkening of the page edges, with a couple of light marks. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. 320 pages. Eric Lambert presents his story through the eyes of a dozen or so Australian infantrymen, members of the Second X Battalion, who land in Egypt in January !941. They take part in the victorious Allied advance westward, retreat and are besieged in Tobruk, are withdrawn to Palestine and finally return to action and conclusive victory under Montgomery at El Alamein in October 1942. This brutally honest novel is the story, in miniature, of the whole desert war and perhaps in a large degree that of infantrymen at war anywhere. * A NEAR VG++ copy of the 1st /1st with some faults reducing it to VG, in a poor dust cover now re-inforced and in a protective cover.*.
