The above only applies to the reprinted edition. * Originally written in Dutch by Caron & Jooft Schouten. A rare & important account of relations and trade between the Japanese and the Dutch East-India Company in the 17th century. * Caron, a Hugenot whose family fled to Holland, served as cook's mate on an East-Indiaman. On arrival in Japan he became a clerk in the Dutch factory and, learning Japanese became interpreter. He became second-in-command of the Company and, in 1665 joined the French Company in a similar post. . This account first published in English in 1663. The account of Siam was written just by Jooft Schouten & covers 31 pages. . Only the 1935 reprint edition contains C.R. Boxer's 129 page copious introduction, notes and appendixes. *** H.
