Hardcover. Condition: VG. No Jacket. Photos, Figures, Maps (illustrator). 1st. This comprehensive study of the brown trout in the UK by two distinguished women biologists was published as a special volume in the New Naturalist series on wild life in Britain. As well as being academics, the co-authors also carried out extensive field work for the book, which includes the "anatomy, physiology, taxonomy, geography, life history, ontogeny, heredity and ecology" plus a general history of the trout and its inter-action with man. While basically a scientific examination of the subject, the book contains much of interest to the fisher as well as to those with a more specialised interest in the fish, its habitat and habits. First edition of 1967 in Collins' New Naturalist series, 286 pages including eight appendices, references and index, illustrated throughout ---- the first plate shows colour images of variable colouration of four brown trout, 17 other plates carry b/w photos most with multiple images, 26 figures (sketches and diagrams) and seven maps. Green hard covers are VG with few unobtrusive spots both boards, gilt titles on a lightly sunned spine, small ink obliteration of former owner name top FFEP, text block otherwise excellent.

The Collins New Naturalist series is the longest-running and arguably the most influential natural history series in the world with over 100 volumes published in over 60 years. While the mainstream New Naturalist volumes were initially intended to deal with broad subjects such as wild flowers, insects or National Parks, a parallel New Naturalist series of monographs on single species or related groups of species was also published between 1948 and 1971. There have been no additions since. This was number 21 of just 22 monographs. Ref OO 3.
