Guter Zustand. - Anicius Manlius Torquatus Severinus Boëthius (* zwischen 475 und 480 in Rom, zwischen 524 und 526 in Pavia) war ein spätantiker christlicher Philosoph. Er gilt als der letzte Repräsentant des antiken Römertums unter den Gelehrten und Philosophen; in diesem Sinne endet die spätantike Kultur im Westen mit ihm als letztem Römer". Jedenfalls gehört er noch ganz der antiken, nicht der frühmittelalterlichen Welt an. Leben: Boëthius entstammte wie Anicia Juliana und später Papst Gregor der Große der uralten, angesehenen und einflussreichen römischen Familie der Anicii. Sein Vater Flavius Manlius Boëthius war wie auch viele seiner Vorfahren Konsul gewesen (487). Boëthius verlor seinen Vater in jungen Jahren, doch fand er in Quintus Aurelius Memmius Symmachus, der ebenfalls einer der bekanntesten Familien Roms entstammte, einen liebevollen Pflegevater, dessen Tochter Rusticiana er später heiraten sollte. Bereits in jungen Jahren wurde Boëthius, der offenbar eine umfassende Bildung genoss, als Gelehrter geschätzt. Daneben spielte er auch politisch eine wichtige Rolle und stieg zu höchsten Staatsämtern auf. 510 wurde er Consul ordinarius (d.h. das Jahr benennender Konsul) ungewöhnlicherweise ohne einen oströmischen Kollegen. Als 522 seine beiden Söhne, Symmachus und Boëthius, zu Konsuln ernannt wurden und er selbst Magister officiorum wurde, d. h. an die Spitze der Reichverwaltung des Ostgotenkönigs Theoderich trat, erreichte er den Höhepunkt seines Ruhmes und Einflusses. Problematisch war aber seine Stellung als Römer und Katholik im Reich des arianischen Ostgotenkönigs. Als nach dem Regierungsantritt des oströmischen Kaisers Justin I. die Kirchengemeinschaft zwischen Konstantinopel und Rom im Jahr 519 wiederhergestellt wurde, befürchtete Theoderich wohl einen großangelegten, politisch und religiös begründeten Angriff auf seine Machtbasis und verdächtigte seine römischen und katholischen Untertanen, mit den ebenfalls mehrheitlich katholischen" Oströmern zu sympathisieren und zu konspirieren. In der Tat betrachteten wohl die meisten Senatoren den Kaiser als ihren eigentlichen Souverän; der Gotenkönig agierte in ihren Augen nur als dessen Statthalter. Eine maßgebliche Rolle spielte in der oströmischen Politik schon damals der künftige Nachfolger Justins, Justinian I., der dann weniger als ein Jahrzehnt nach Theoderichs Tod tatsächlich den Vernichtungskrieg gegen das Ostgotenreich begann. In diesem Zusammenhang geriet auch Boëthius in Verdacht, da er sich nachdrücklich für den wegen Hochverrats angeklagten Senator Albinus einsetzte. Er wurde abgesetzt, von dem für solche Fälle zuständigen senatorischen Gericht wegen Hochverrats verurteilt, bei Pavia eingekerkert und schließlich hingerichtet. Das Todesjahr ist nicht genau bekannt, die neuere Forschung tendiert aber mehr zum Jahr 526 als zum Jahr 524, das in der älteren Forschung oft vertreten wurde. Die Einzelheiten und die Rolle Theoderichs im Zusammenhang mit dem Prozess sind unklar und stark umstritten. Boëthius beteuerte seine völlige Unschuld, und die antiken Quellen (auch Prokopios) teilen einhellig diese Auffassung. Für eine Beurteilung ist zu beachten: Es ist nicht zu bezweifeln, dass Boëthius und sein ebenfalls angeklagter und hingerichteter Schwiegervater sich als Römer betrachteten, d.h. dass ihre Loyalität dem Senat und der römischen Reichsidee, nicht dem König und der Gotenherrschaft galt. Es ist möglich, aber nicht bewiesen, dass Boëthius seine Stellung nutzte, um zu versuchen, die Anklage gegen Albinus zu verhindern und die Angelegenheit zu vertuschen. Nach den Angaben des Boëthius, die von anderen Quellen gestützt werden, wurde er in Abwesenheit verurteilt und erhielt keine Gelegenheit, sich angemessen zu verteidigen. Das Gericht tagte in Rom, während er in Pavia im Gefängnis saß. Boëthius behauptet, dass seine Gegner gefälschte Briefe als Beweismaterial vorlegten. Formalrechtlich war Theoderich an dem Verfahren und Urteil nicht beteiligt, aber es ist anzunehmen, dass der Vollzug eines Todesurteils gegen eine Persönlichkeit dieses Ranges dennoch eine politische Entscheidung des Königs und sei es nur die, demonstrativ nicht in das Verfahren einzugreifen voraussetzte. Sein Hauptwerk, Der Trost der Philosophie, Consolatio philosophiae (auch: Philosophiae consolationis [libri quinque] oder De consolatione philosophiae), entstand erst nach seiner Inhaftierung. Mit der Gestaltung als Prosimetrum (Prosaerzählung unterbrochen von Verspartien in verschiedenen Versmaßen) griff Boëthius eine in der Spätantike beliebte Form auf (vgl. Martianus Capella). Maßgebliche Thesen, die Boëthius hier vertritt, sind: Ewigkeit ist nicht lediglich Unendlichkeit (im Sinne einer zeitlichen Abfolge), sondern das Zugleich von Allem (consolatio V, 6); der freie Wille des Menschen ist mit der Vorsehung vereinbar; Erkennen geschieht in der Weise des Erkennenden (consolatio V, 4). Der Trost war im Mittelalter außerordentlich beliebt, wurde oft kommentiert und in die Volkssprachen übersetzt. So kommentierte etwa Notker III. das Werk in althochdeutscher Prosa unter reicher Verwendung lateinischer und griechischer Fremdwörter. Das Werk wurde teils als Ausdruck einer Abkehr des Boëthius vom Christentum gedeutet, da er nirgends auf den Glauben Bezug nimmt, sondern zentrale metaphysische und ethische Fragen ausschließlich im Sinne der antiken philosophischen Tradition (vor allem des Neuplatonismus) behandelt. Sein Gottesbegriff entspricht dem Begriff des Einen, der höchsten Hypostase des neuplatonischen Systems. Die Frage, inwieweit eine solche Haltung angesichts des bevorstehenden Todes mit dem kirchlichen Glauben vereinbar war und wie sich die persönliche Religiosität des Boëthius entwickelt hat, ist seit langem umstritten. Allerdings wird in der neueren Forschung betont, dass das Werk auch keine Bezüge enthält, die gegen das Christentum sprechen, zumal das spätantike Christentum schon.
