Book First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Fair. 1st Edition. First and only edition of this important guide to the treaty ports open for trade in China and Japan in the mid 19th century. Octavo, pp viii, 668, Appendix A I-XLVII, Appendices B&C, pp 1-26. Bound in burgundy cloth covered hard boards with gilt lettering to the spine. The book is missing the title page and the half title is loose. There are several binder's errors as follows: pp1-8 are bound in twice, following p224 is p257-264, and then the book continues from p233 onwards. Of the 29 maps listed only 11 are present including the Plan of Shanghai, the map of Tientsin to Tungchow (which is in poor condition) and all the Japan maps and plans. The book has a lengthy inscription dated 1874 to William Hancock from his father John. William Hancock was an Irish botanist who worked for the Chinese Imperial Maritime Customs Service from 1874 until 1908 and was resident in several of the places covered herein including Amoy, Chefoo and Peking. The book is also ex-libris The Hong Kong Club Library, received into the library in 1952 (as marked on a bookplate pasted to the front endpaper) and with subsequent discard stamps. A sadly incomplete but rather storied copy of this important and scarce book. The book is graded Fair only due to the missing maps, title page and the binder's errors but what remains is clean, there is no foxing and the binding is tight.

First Edition
8vo. VIII, (2), 668, (2), XLVIII, (2), 26, (2) pp. With 29 mostly folded maps and charts, block-printed in colour. Recent half morocco with gilt lettering on spine. First edition; the scarce original printing. - As trade between the East and the West grew in the mid-19th century, increasing numbers of Westerners travelled to China and Japan, and in 1867 this guide to the key port cities such as Hong Kong and Nagasaki was published in both Hong Kong and London. Its editor, Nicholas Belfield Dennys (ca 1813-99), claimed it was the first such comprehensive handbook printed for public distribution. Intended for visitors and new residents, the guide was originally typeset in China, allowing place names and other words to be printed in Chinese characters. The specially commissioned maps were also engraved in China. The book includes physical descriptions and brief histories of over twenty cities, details of schools and libraries, population statistics and much practical information, as well as a list of other publications on China and Japan. It is a valuable historical source on East Asia during a period of rapid change. - Includes appendices, folding maps, a folding illustration of "Japanese Coinage", and one page "Reference to Map of Peking" (complete as called for in the Table of Contents, "List of Maps, &c". Stamp of the Danish Royal Navy Library ("Marinens Bibliothek") and Officers' School on title-page. Internally clean and fine.
