Descriptions of the common New Zealand species together with much anecdote and reminiscence of encounters with the various species described, angling and otherwise. Much more readable than most icthyology books. "In this book I have endeavoured to write for a wide public - for boys and girls at school; for the sport fisherman, the commercial fisherman; for the man who wants to know 'What fish have I caught?'; for overseas visitors; for my Maori friends; for schoolteachers; for training college students and lecturers; for the university student; for all those who wish to learn how fish behave in captivity, and how they act in the sea, in river, and in harbour - in other words, the domestic affairs of native fishes. .To observe and record the habits of many of our New Zealand fishes in captivity has been my good fortune, and whole this book does not include all New Zealand species of fish, it does bring the reader my personal observations of the more common ones and others likely to be met with. While conscious that this book does not give the complete habits of every fish described, I offer the reader the results of over half a lifetime's observations of the fascinating day-to-day happenings in the lives of our fishes." .

Hardcover. Condition: VG+. Dust Jacket Condition: VG. Photos, Drawings (illustrator). 1st. When this book was published it was the first available as a popular guide to fish identification and although a number of other similar volumes followed it remains a reliable work of reference. The idea for the book came while the author was employed as a marine biologist at a Marine fishes centre near Dunedin, inspired by the many question he answered regarding fish type and habits, species identification from commercial and sport fishers, from boys and girls in school parties and from the general public. In his preface the author said he wrote for the widest possible readership avoiding, where possible, the use of technical terms. Part two of his book "New Zealand Fishes" lists 127 separate fish types each with a descrioption of its particular biological traits, habits --- examples ranging from shark species to the tiny but prized Inanga or whitebait. In each entry the fish described is also illustrated. The opening text section provides (in nine chapters) an overview of various aspects of the NZ fishes, including an answer to "What is a Fish?", their territorial movement, teeth, reproduction and development, parasites, ageing, commercial fishing and food value of fish. First edition of 1953 from Reed, 404 pages including glossary and index. Illustrated with b/w photo frontis of author and throughout with b/w photos or drawings of specimen fish. Green hard covers with black front and spine titles are VG+. small/neat ink name top edge front pastedown with dealer label lower right corner, otherwise internally excellent, no inscriptions.
