Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Thunder and Lightning: A No-B. S. Hockey Memoir by Phil Esposito, Peter Gol enbock Jesus saves - but Espo puts in the rebound in this raucous, ribald memoir At a party marking the end of his third season with the Blackhawks, Phil Es posito told coach Billy Reay and GM Tommy Ivan that they had a great team, maybe even a dynasty, but that the two of them would screw it up. It was a classic Espo moment (and may have had something to do with his bei ng traded to the Bruins): the big centre from the Soo who became one of hoc key's all-time leading scorers, has never been reluctant to speak his mind. In this rollicking hockey memoir, he reveals what it was like to play with other Hall of Famers like Howe and Hull and Orr. He recalls his acrimoniou s encounters with Allan Eagleson, the incredible intensity of the 1972 Cana da-Russia series, the fabulous ride with the great Bruins teams of the earl y 1970s, and the tough years that followed with the New York Rangers. From being a player, Esposito went on to be a commentator, a coach, a general manager, and then founder and part-owner of the Tampa Bay Lightning. He saw it all: the booze, the drugs, the women, the wheeling and dealing, the good times and the camaraderie, the bad times and the back-stabbing. In telling what it was really like, Esposito takes readers into the boardrooms, back rooms - and even the bedrooms - of the men who make their lives in the NHL.

Hockey Memoir truly lives up to its name, and so much more. Readers of this book will feel like they are actually listening to the Hall of Famer himself tell his story. The way Phil Esposito writes, it doesn't even feel like a book and it reads like you're being spoken to. Thunder and Lightning go into every part of Phil's life that will keep you hooked for hours. Not only does he talk about his life growing up, and of course what it was like to play in the NHL, but he tells all of his crazy stories and things he's done, that you couldn't hear anywhere else. Personally, my favorite story was when he talked about getting injured and having to go to the hospital during a game when he played with Boston. Afterward, the rest of his teammates wanted to go out and party so they came to the hospital, distracted the employees, and carried Phil in his hospital bed to the party. The hospital ended up thinking he was kidnapped. And that's just one of the great stories that you can read about. Another thing about Phil that makes this book great is his honesty. He doesn't care what you or anyone else thinks of him, if he's got something to say he's going to say it. This comes up time and time again in the book. Because of this, he spills the dirt on everyone, including himself, giving a much more personal and informative feel to the book. Without a doubt, anyone who is a fan of hockey, the Tampa Bay Lightning (you also get to hear about how he founded the team), or the Hall of Famer himself will enjoy this book."-Joshua.
