About this Item: Privately Printed Wilton, 1st ed., 1993. 415 pp., many photo-ills. D.j., 22 x 14cm. FINE. Signed by the author, "Nicho Poland" on the title-page. TLS from Alastair Wilson (Cmdr. A. J. W. Wilson, RN., acknowledged in the book) to the late Captain A. B. Sainsbury (see No. 95 for his details) tipped in, dated 15 May 1993, (also acknowledged : "I am indebted to Captain A. B. Sainsbury RNR who joined the committee and brought us down to earth with a bang, eliminating the clutch of clichés of which I had been guilty from the first draft." The letter begins : "Dear Tony, At Nicho’s request, and with his compliments, I enclose a copy of ‘The Torpedomen’. I am happy to say that it has received plaudits from all those to whom I have spoken, or with whom I have corresponded, since its publication". The letter continues on the topic of typing errors and the publication of the book. The Royal Navy’s torpedo school, HMS VERNON, finally closed in 1986 and this detailed and absorbing history is based on ten years of painstaking research. Admiral Poland traces the story of VERNON from 1872 when an old wooden wall was converted for torpedo training and experimental work. He continues on through the 19th and early 20th centuries to the First World War when the torpedo came into its own. He describes the inter-war era before examining in depth the development and use of torpedo and undersea warfare between 1939 and 1945. The author ends with a look at VERNON’S role in the post-war era ; rationalization and the last ‘Vernons’. Two appendices list the names on ‘The Wheel’, 1872-1986, as well as captains of the establishment during the same period. Admiral Poland entered Dartmouth in 1930 and served as a midshipman in HOOD and SHROPSHIRE. Following his long torpedo course at VERNON, he took part in raids on TIRPITZ from HMS FURIOUS. He was urged to write this book by Captain Roskill. Seller Inventory # C144B193
