Item Description: Clive Holloway. London. (1941) 1986 new edition. Large 8vo (141 x 222mm). Pp405,ad. Woodcut illustrations by Christopher Wormell, pictorial end-papers. Usual browning to pages. Good copy in rather scratched and shelf-worn dust-wrapper. This is a newly illustrated edition of this interesting account of Williamson's first two years as an amateur farmer in Norfolk, just before the outbreak of the Second World War. Williamson had until then lived in Devon, devoting his time to writing novels and vignettes of Devonshire country life. "After writing Tarka the Otter, Salar the Salmon, and a dozen other books set in Devon my father was mentally exhausted. . .He needed a new stimulus to continue writing and living." Since Williamson knew absolutely nothing about farming, he was letting himself in for a harder time than the one from which he was escaping. His other motive was that he saw the war coming "and was afraid for the future of his family. The time would come when imported food would be cut off. He alone would have to provide for them." In addition to that practical consideration, Williamson's time on the Western Front had given him a fascination for war, and so "he was drawn by the fascination and spectacle of conflict to live on that side of England nearest the crucible of European change." Awaiting the intellectual stimulation offered by Operation Sealion, he became "disenchanted with some local local people who spread the rumour that he was in league with Germany and said that [his] building of bridges and new roads was a preparation for invasion and even that the skylight tiles in his Studio were arranged in a special way so as to signal to Luftwaffe navigators." That said, when war broke out, Williamson thought that it was some kind of tragic error and was only stopped by friends from travelling to Germany to see Hitler in person, and Williamson opens his book with an 'inspiring' quote from Sir Oswald Mosley, Britain's leading nazi. Item Description: Clive Holloway, [1986], 1986. 8vo., First Edition thus, with a frontispiece, title-vignette, numerous illustrations (a number full-page) in the text and endpaper maps, page edges browning slightly as usual; black cloth, gilt back, a near fine copy in unclipped dustwrapper. Lovely copy of Williamson's evocative account of two years as a working farmer. This edition is a much-needed re-issue of the second text of 1941, augmented by delightful (and original) woodcut illustrations by Wormell and a helpful introduction by Williamson's son Richard. The print size has been enlarged and some lines repositioned to compensate. Already elusive in its own right. Matthews A27/1986 (p.113). Bookseller Inventory # 10657
