Book
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Dust-jacket: N. First edition: Y. First edition. 8vo. Advertisements. Original cloth. Foxing, RFA ink stamp to front endpaper; cloth a little rubbed and slightly faded at spine, but overall VG. Two poems and eight short stories, mostly of darkly supernatural nautical themes inspired by the author's own time at sea. "Long neglected, unappreciated, one of most important formative influences in modern tale of supernatural horror." (Bleiler). Very rare. Royal Field Artillery ink stamp to front endpaper - this is significant, as after graduating from the OTC, Hodgson was commissioned as a Lieutenant in the British Army, and took up a role with the 171st Battery of the Royal Field Artillery (New Army Division). During the training with this division, Hodgson sustained a head injury, resulting in him being billeted out of the Army and sent home to convalesce in June 1916, the same year this work was published.
