Paperback. Condition: Near Fine-Collectible. 1st Edition Thus. 14TH PRINTING. 5.5"x8.5 216 numb. pgs. Foreword by Rennard Strickland. Cover illustration by Katherine Potter. Spine straight, binding tight, pages clean w/soft tone. Not x-library, unclipped, & unmarked. Small scrape to back cover. Secure ship w/track #. The Education of Little Tree tells of a boy orphaned very young, who is adopted by his Cherokee grandmother and half-Cherokee grandfather in the Appalachian mountains of Tennessee during the Great Depression. "Little Tree" as his grandparents call him is shown how to hunt and survive in the mountains, to respect nature in the Cherokee Way, taking only what is needed, leaving the rest for nature to run its course. Little Tree also learns the often callous ways of white businessmen and tax collectors, and how Granpa, in hilarious vignettes, scares them away from his illegal attempts to enter the cash economy. Granma teaches Little Tree the joys of reading and education. But when Little Tree is taken away by whites for schooling, we learn of the cruelty meted out to Indian children in an attempt to assimilate them and of Little Tree's perception of the Anglo world and how it differs from the Cherokee Way. A classic of its era, and an enduring book for all ages, The Education of Little Tree has now been redesigned for this twenty-fifth anniversary edition.

"This autobiographical story of Forrest Carters boyhood illuminates tha almost mystical communion between Indian and his land- a feeling that goes far beyond what we call ecology." (from the dustjacket) "Whether or not Carter wrote The Education of Little Tree from his actual childhood memories of his Cherokee uncle and grandparents has been disputed. Carter had been an active participant in several white supremacist organizations, including the Ku Klux Klan and the White Citizens' Council. He was also a speechwriter for Alabama governor George Wallace, for whom he allegedly wrote Wallace's famous line "Segregation now, segregation tomorrow, segregation forever.". in 1970 he ran for governor. on a White supremacist platform, finishing fourth among the seven candidates listed on the Democratic Party ballot. In the years following his active political engagement, Carter left Alabama, changed his name, and began his second career as an author, taking care to conceal his background." (from Wikipedia).

Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. 1st Edition. First edition 1st printing, Fine minus, unread book that is lightly crimped at top of spine, in a Fine minus jacket with a very light scratch and slight rubbing to back panel. This was a cheaply produced book and is fairly scarce in such nice condition. This novel was originally thought to be Carter's autobiographically story of being an orphan raised by his Cherokee Indian grandparents. Carter claimed to be part Cherokee and was thought to be a cowboy drifter. However, he fooled his publisher and most of his readers with his fictional account. Carter was actually living a double life and had been an avid segregationist and a speech writer for Alabama Governor George Wallace. The 1992 story, The Real Education of Little Tree (published in Texas Monthly), covers the history of Carter (who was actually Asa Earl Carter) and his fake autobiography a fascinating story that is stranger than fiction.
