Dermoût was born on a sugar plantation in Java and after completing her education in the Netherlands, returned to the island and lived there for 25 years, soaking in the culture and folklore which would become a part of her two published novels. Translated from the original Dutch by Hans Koning and part of the Library of the Indies series edited by E.M. Beekman. 8vo, 314pp. Beige cloth, spine stamped in gilt, illustrated jacket. Very good, spine cocked and with ownership stamp and signature of M.T. Fravel on ffep. Jacket has some rubbing along folds else nicely preserved.
