Soft cover. Condition: Good. Softcover. Stiff, black-and-white pictorial paper covers, stapled at the fold. 7 1/2 x 10 3/5 inches, 47 pages, in good condition. Illustrated throughout, in black-and-white and with technical drawings, with images of pulverizers and crushers. Pages 5-11 consist of short descriptions of specifications for individual crusher/pulverizer components - ball bearings, screen bars and racks, metal catchers, feeders, and others. Table on page 11 lists rack patterns by size (in inches), style of rack, size of openings between bars, and number of racks in set. Labeled technical drawing on page 12 gives approximate physical dimensions of a Type A crusher. Three tables are listed on page 13: a table of speeds, capacities, power and dimension of Type A pulverizers, and two tables listing capacities (in tons/hr) of Type A pulverizers to reduce certain types of materials - limestone, coal, gypsum, rock salt, among others. Technical drawings on page 16 give physical dimensions for the Type A junior pulverizer; accompanying description gives other specifications - weight, RPM and horsepower. Page 19 gives a table for Type A oyster shell grinders, whether grinding shells for chicken grit or agricultural lime, measuring physical dimensions, horsepower, weight, RPM, and capacity (in tons). Page 21 gives a table of capacities and power ratings for the Type A black gut hasher, listing physical dimensions, horsepower, and RPM for either hog entrails or cattle pecks. Page 22 contains a technical drawing that gives approximate physical dimensions for the black gut hasher. Page 23 gives tables for approximate speeds, capacities and power for the Type A pulverizer when reducing bone, tankage, meat cake, cracklings, or fish scrap, listing physical dimensions, horsepower, weight, and RPM. Pages 24-32 consist of short descriptions of specifications for individual crusher/pulverizer components - ball bearings, screen bars and racks, metal catchers, feeders, and others. Page 24 has a labeled black-and-white illustration that identifies the location of important components on the pulverizer. Page 33 has a table that gives approximate speeds, capacities and power of miracle hammer crushers, listing physical dimensions, horsepower, weight, RPM, and others. Page 34 has four labeled technical drawings that give approximate physical dimensions for the Type B pulverizer. Page 35 has three tables: one that lists speeds, capacities and power of the Type B pulverizer, and one that discriminates by the type of material being pulverized. Page 37 gives tables for approximate speeds, capacities and power for the Type A pulverizer when reducing bone, tankage, meat cake, or cracklings, listing physical dimensions, horsepower, weight, and RPM. Page 41 gives a table for approximate speeds, capacities, and power of the flextooth metal turnings crusher, listing physical dimensions, capacity in tons per hour, horsepower, RPM, weight and size of feed opening; accompanying technical illustrations give a sense of scale to the crusher. Covers exhibit moderate shelfwear, heavier at the spine, which has faded; they have begun to become detached from the pages, both from the head of the spine to the first staple, as well as from the foot of the spine to the second staple. Front cover bears stamps from a catalogue library, including one with date (December 6, 1935) indicating date of receipt, and a sticker with a cataloging number, J572, written in ink. Pages are clean and free of pencil or pen markings. The Jeffrey Manufacturing Company, a manufacturer of industrial equipment, was based in Columbus, Ohio. $20.

Book
An excellent association copy inscribed by one eminent Scottish writer to another and annotated by the recipient, Alasdair Gray. Bound in the publisher's illustrated card wrappers, about very good and inscribed on the first endpaper: 'With fondest regards, Jeff Torrington 10-8-92'. Gray seems to have read the first two thirds of the book enthusiastically, leaving fold marks on the spine and a damp stain across the top half of the first few dozen pages. Chapter 18 is annotated with Gray objecting to several passages but endorsing 'I shrugged. "Things are a wee bit bogged doon at the moment."' Laid in a scrap of paper with a telephone number and the name of the Paisley poet Margaret Fulton Cook, apparently in Gray's hand. Provenance: from the recent dispersal sale of Alasdair Gray's library. Alasdair Gray (1934-2019) was acknowledged as one of the most innovative figures in Scottish literature and culture. A painter, novelist, playwright, poet and editor, Gray often combined his diverse artistic talents within single works to challenge existing forms. The British Council's biography of him describes how 'Blending satire and tragedy, realism and fantasy, his work has been credited with spurring a renaissance in Scottish literature (Gray's success anticipates that of James Kelman, Jeff Torrington and Irvine Welsh).'
