Hardcover. Condition: Good. 1st. Two girls who grow up to become women. Two friends who become something worse than enemies. In this brilliantly imagined novel, Toni Morrison tells the story of Nel Wright and Sula Peace, who meet as children in the small town of Medallion, Ohio. Their devotion is fierce enough to withstand bullies and the burden of a dreadful secret. It endures even after Nel has grown up to be a pillar of the black community and Sula has become a pariah. But their friendship ends in an unforgivable betrayal-or does it end? Terrifying, comic, ribald and tragic, Sula is a work that overflows with life.

Soft cover. Condition: Good. 1st Edition. Journal of Animal Ecology, v7 n2, pages 305-313. 1. Gannets (Sula bassana L.) on Noss, Shetland, have increased from 1 pair in 1914 to 1518 breeding pairs in 1938. 2. Relations with other birds are discussed. 3. On 29 August 1937 a group of 68 pairs had 57 chicks. 4. Until 1934 or 1935 colonization took place from outside. 5. There is no evidence for colonization after 1935, though it is probable. 6. If gannets were immortal and perpetually fertile, their increase in a closed community would be approximately 25% per annum. In nature, then, an increase more rapid than this must be partly due to colonization. 7. If only one-third of young gannets reach maturity, and once mature are immortal, their increase in a closed community will be approximately 12% per annum. In nature an increase more rapid than this is probably due to colonization. 8. An increase of under 12% per annum gives no clear evidence for colonization. 9. The effect is discussed of such factors as habitat selection, social breeding stimulus, ``conservatism'', possible rate of increase, mortality, supply of nest sites, earthquakes, collectors and man on the history and numbers of a gannet colony.

Soft cover. Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. Softcover in Near Fine condition, pp142, b&w and some colour illustrations. Introduction by Brian Jackman. Once a year, in the utmost secrecy, ten chosen men from Ness in Lewis spend two weeks on a remote rock in the Atlantic where they harvest 2000 gannets - the guga - part of a tradition that has existed for over four centuries. After the abandonment of St Kilda, this is the last remnant of a great tradition, and until recently, carried out in an open boat. In 1954 the men of Ness were specifically exempted under the Protection of Birds Act. The tradition is handed down from father to son and only if there is a break in the chain is a new member chosen.

Soft cover. Condition: Good. 1st Edition. Journal of Animal Ecology, v12 n2, pages 173-213. Abstract: 1. In 1939 an attempt to make a census, within the space of one breeding season, of the world population of the gannet (Sula bassana L.), was organized by the writers. 2. In 1939 gannets were breeding at 22 colonies. Three of these were in south-west Britain, 2 in east Britain, 2 in west Britain, 6 in north Britain and the Faeroes, 3 in Iceland and 6 in the Gulf of St Lawrence. Of these, all the colonies in Britain, the Faeroes and Iceland were visited in 1939. Of the colonies in the Gulf of St Lawrence 2 were visited in 1939, 1 in 1940, 1 in 1941 (not having been discovered previously) and 2 for the last time in 1934 and 1936. The colonies not visited in 1939 contained about 2.5% of the world population. 3. The history of the 39 places where gannets breed, have bred, have been suspected to have bred, or have occupied cliffs or ledges in the breeding season is fully discussed, as are the results of the 1939 census. A summary is provided in Table 4. All save 6 which are of doubtful or vague history are shown on Map 5. 4. The number of breeding individuals of Sula bassana in 1939 was 165,600 +- 9500. The limits of error were worked out from a sample of over half the population, which was breeding at colonies where more than one observer took part in the census, and represent the maximum recorded discrepancy between the counts of the different observers of each group of nests in the colonies. 5. A full discussion of trends in the gannet's population during the last hundred years, and of certain ecological points and biological matters which arise from this survey, is reserved for Part 2 of this paper.
