There were other word games invented before this, of course, such as the word squares from ancient Rome - but most stemmed from the Victorian era (Queen Victoria is reputed to have invented the acrostic) The book examines the curious roots of the crossword and its development through the 1920s when Mr Simon and Mr schuster built their publishing empire from the first crossword puzzle book to the development of the cryptic clue by the great puzzle compilers of the 1930s.
