Lithograph with engraving in colors on cream wove paper, 20 3/4 x 14 3/8 inches (521 x 364 mm), full margins. Scattered light surface soiling on the recto and verso, minor toning, and two small strips of non-archival tape at the top right and left sheet corners on the verso. From the folio of the same title containing 25 lithographed plates. Samuel Prout was born in Plymouth in 1783 to Samuel Prout Senior, a naval outfitter, and Mary Cater, a homemaker; the fourth of fourteen children. Prout grew up in the countryside, and spent his summers as a youth sketching and painting the bucolic valleys, thatched cottages, water mills, and serene rivers in Devon. This ink and wash is likely one of Prout's early works from the years when he was under the tutelage of author, artist and educator Dr. John Bidlake.

First Edition
Cloth. Condition: Very Good. Samuel Prout (illustrator). First edition. A scarce first edition copy of this charming collection of illustrations by one of the masters of British watercolour architectural painting, Samuel Prout. An important and influential English artist, Samuel Prout was employed as 'Painter in Water-Colours in Ordinary' to both King George IV and Queen Victoria. This work contains a brief yet fascinating introduction entitled "On the Importance of Figures", which succinctly yet technically describes the devices used in drawing figures within a setting. This study is then illustrated by a series of twenty four plates that explore the humanfigue in a variety of scenes. Many of the plates depict groups of people engaging in everyday activities. Moreover, the plates also demonstrate Prout's talent for replicating architecture. This work is collated complete with twenty four plates, each with a protective tissue guard. With publisher's adverts to the rear of the work. With the bookplate of Roy and Nina Merley to the front pastedown. The Merleys owned Plaish Hall, Shropshire; a stunning Grade I Tudor house that is mentioned in the Domesday Book. The home once belonged to Judge William Leighton, who was an amateur poet and sixteenth century composer. The house, as it stands now, was built in two stages for Leighton, who was presiding over a trial of prisoners whilst the home was being completed. Roy and Nina Merley owned the house for thirty-five years and were responsible for reinstating the Tudor style gardens and renovating the house to its former glory. Their bookplate has an image of the house in the background, with a blackbird eating a worm in the foreground. In the original cloth binding, with gilt stamped embellishment and title to front board and spine. Externally very smart with slight bumping to extremities and head and tail of spine. Cloth split and lifting to head and tail of spine. Slight fading to extremities and spine, as expected with this colour binding. Prior owner's bookplate tipped to front pastedown. Internally firmly bound. Pages slightly age toned but very bright and clean. The odd light scattered spot and age toning to plates. Very Good. book.
