Book First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. First Edition. 272 pages. Red binding with gold letters on spine. A few B/w illustrations . This account of the life of the famous British explorer John Franklin examines his incident-filled and sometimes contentious career from his early days, when he fought at the battle of Trafalgar, to his last expedition to seek the fabled Northwest Passage when he vanished along with his men in controversial and mysterious circumstances.Though his name is perhaps one of the most significant in the many recent books written on Arctic exploration, no biography has appeared for over twenty years. Theories - many wild - continue to abound on the fate of his final expedition of 1845, while questions hang over his first Arctic overland expedition, when many men died of cold and starvation and Franklin himself was hours from death. The author has tackled these episodes in a fair and balanced way and, drawing on much recent research, settled many of the wilder theories.A significant part of the book is also devoted to Franklin the sailor and the man. He was present at two of Nelson's most famous battles, Copenhagen and Trafalgar, and sailed with the great navigator Matthew Flinders on the first circumnavigation of Australia. The book covers his governorship of Tasmania, and gives an insight into the corruption and political chicanery which finally drove him out. Franklin was married to two exceptional women, and through surviving letters and diaries we catch a glimpse of his relationship with the precocious but frail Eleanor Anne Porden, who died tragically young while he was away on an expedition. He subsequently married the strong-willed Jane Griffin, who won great admiration in her attempts to pressure the Admiralty to step up their efforts to find her missing husband. Photos on request.
