Book
Print on Demand Edition 2020. (iv), 224 pp. + illus. The surrender of Charleston to the British on May 12, 1780, in which General Lincoln and some 2500 Continental soldiers were taken prisoner, and large amounts of cannon, small arms, and ammunition captured, was the greatest British victory and the worse American disaster of the American Revolution. A prolific 19th century editory and compiler, Franklin Hough's collection of primary sources for this military engagement includes the correspondence which passed between the commanding generals, contemporary newspaper accounts of the action, and eyewitness accounts from the participants. A major source is James Riverton's Royal Gazette, a Tory paper which gives a British point of view. These documents are introduced with a careful examination of the circumstances and events which led to the siege.
