Book First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Despite the book's title, a number of these Berryman poems could not be considered "short". There are 64 poems here including the complete contents of "The Dispossessed" (previously out of print), "His Thought Made Pockets & the Plane Buckt (previously available only in a privately issued limited edition), and "Formal Elegy" on JFK's death. This is a handsome book - yellow marbled boards, brown backstrip, bright red endpages - that's clean, undamaged, tight. Very very faintly faded at very top of spine. The dust jacket has 1/2" to 3/4" tears at spine bottom, top front edge and back flap fold; a few tiny edge chips at folds and on back; light soiling from age, especially along folds; not price-clipped.

First edition. 120 pp. Very near fine in very near fine dust jacket. This volume collects many of Berryman's short lyrics and brief lyric sequences, excluding of course his two masterpieces, the early HOMAGE TO MISTRESS BRADSTREET and THE DREAM SONGS of middle-to-late career. However, the volume manages to sample a wide range: from his earliest work--THE DISPOSSESSED of 1948--to a much later poem, 'Formal Elegy,' written in memory of JFK.
