Hardcover. Condition: Good. Reprint Of 1957 Ed., 8vo pp 212. Presentation inscription on dedication page, 'To Dr. Stearn with deep admiration, Edith Bone, Kew, 18th. Oct. 1966'. Dr Stearn was Dr. W. T. Stearn (1911-2001), the noted British botanist, who lived at Kew. His decorative bookplate is on the front pastedown, and his signature on the ffep. Edith Bone (1889-1975), a doctor and committed Communist, worked for the Comintern in Berlin from 1923 to 1933. She served against Franco in Spain and later, while living in Hampstead, may well have helped Soviet Intelligence recruit spies. She was sentenced to seven years' solitary confinement in a Budapest political prison in 1949, accused of spying for the British Government, and was released in 1956 by a student group in the last days before the collapse of the Hungarian revolution against the Soviets. Uncommon in any edition, especially with signed presentation inscription. VG in G+ d.j. (some marks and rubbing, with creases and tears to extremities and very small loss in places). A little cocked; minor creases to some prelims. Signedes.
