"Gibbon Sengai (1750-1837) war einer der großen japanischen Zen-Meister der alten Schule. Schon als junger Mann ging er in ein Kloster und unterwarf sich den traditionellen, strengen Zen-Übungen. Nach einer langen Pilgerfahrt durch das Land und einer noch längeren Studienzeit bei seinem Meister Gessen Zenji wurde er zum Abt von Shofukuji, dem ältesten Zen-Tempel in Japan, gewählt.
