Condition: Very good. First printing. Limited edition of Pater's short work, diabolically illustrated and signed by Alastair. Originally published as one of Pater's IMAGINARY PORTRAITS, the fictional Sebastian draws his philosophy from Spinoza and his aesthetic judgments from Pater's own. Konody's introduction offers brief recognition of the text's importance before rushing on to an ecstasy of frenzied adoration for the illustrator, to whom no superlative is equal: "Like Lindbergh upon his monoplane venturing alone across the Atlantic, Alastair has flown upon his pen the whole breadth of human emotions, and in so doing he has led the way that others may follow." Original beige cloth, stamped in brown and gilt. Number 632 of an edition of 1050 copies. 67, [1] pages. Eight illustrations in color. Signed by Alastair to plate facing page 42. Moderate soil and minor staining to cloth. Mild to moderate foxing throughout.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Cream cloth stamped in gilt and brown. #464/1050. With eight full-page color illustrations by Alastair. The illustration opposite page 52 is signed in pencil, below the image. Title page printed in red and black, illustrations in red, sepia, and black. Condition: very good-near fine. A clean, tight copy that presents nearly fine. Covers: A small soil smudge about ½"x1" on both panels near center of spine; otherwise fine with no bumping or rubbing. Internally: near fine -- some light toning and spotting to front matter pages occasionally very faint foxing; this appears to be a defect in the paper, not external damage [see photos] -- not affecting any of the plates which were printed on different stock. We have handled several copies of this book and this is the nicest copy we have seen. The slipcase is in fair condition. Fully intact but partially split at spine, chipped at bottom spine, surface wear, rubbing to extremities; small inked marking below front label, small stain at right edge corresponds to the soiling on the covers and probably due to removing the book with unclean hand. Signed by Illustrator(s).
