Im Mittelpunkt steht die Frage danach, wie im Prozess der sozialen Kommunikation ein kommunikativer Vorgang als Grenzverletzung markiert wird. Während die Scham körperlich sichtbar macht, was das Subjekt verbergen will, erscheint die Schamlosigkeit als ostentatives Verhalten. Das Verhältnis von Scham und Schamlosigkeit lässt sich daher als Zusammenspiel von dissimulativen und ostentativen Aufführungsstrategien betrachten, welches die Grenzverletzung performativ konstituiert. Der Band zielt insbesondere auf vormoderne Zusammenhänge, da hier in der öffentlichen Verhandlung von Norm- und Verhaltensgrenzen noch keine strikte Trennung zwischen normativen Diskursen und institutionalisierten Rechtsverfahren einerseits und unterschiedlichen rituellen Äußerungen und spontanen face-to-face Interaktionen andererseits herrscht.
