Bel envoi de l'auteur "A Mademoiselle A. Caron, cette simple histoire de mon pays, en attendant de lui envoyer Le Sol, hommage respectueux et reconnaissant". Frédrice Lefèvre précise dans sa préface : "Je conte ici la vie d'un homme qui, fils de sorciers, rusa un temps avec son destin. Mais il fut vite reconquis par les traditions ancestrales. Dans ces contrées du Bas-maine, où l'âme celte continue à brûler, si pure et toujours solitaire, c'est aujourd'hui un puissant guérisseur [ . ]". Au vrai, le héros de ce roman, Samson, n'est personne d'autre que l'auteur lui-même, qui se livre beaucoup dans ce récit largement autobiographique. Natif de Izé, petite commune de la Mayenne, le romancier et critique Frédéric Lefèvre (1889-1949), était lui-même fils de rebouteux "sorcier" !
