The West of today has no more expressive painter than Ross Stefan, an artist who truly understands the land and people of the southwest country. Ross Stefan, through his unique impressionistic style renders the contemporary Southwest on canvas with vibrancy and refreshing perspective. This first comprehensive volume on Stefan and his work contains thirty-two full-color reproductions of oils and numerous black-and- white drawings, creating a panorama of the Southwest. There are impressions of Navajo country, southern Arizona, Indian pueblos, ranches -- as they exist today and each speaking the traditions which have become rooted in the land they depict. The author is an art collector and longtime friend of Stefan. Here he supplies an intimate profile which traces the development of Stefan's style and career. Included are excerpts from articles on Stefan's works which have appeared in American Artist, Arizona Highways, and the New York Times. Stefan discusses his methods and his philosophies on art and the artist. A master of color, Ross Stefan gives to his paintings an often lustrous quality which transcends mere physical representation. His works, whether displayed on a wall or within the pages of a book, delight the eye and intrigue the mind. Here is Ross Stefan's beautiful renditions of the Southwest and its people. First edition. First edition. 4to. This special edition is limited to 100 numbered, slipcased copies, contains an original watercolor by Ross Stefan and is signed by the author. This is copy number 83. This copy is also inscribed on the half title page in the year of publication by both Ross Stefan and John K. Goodnan. Two-tone quarter leather and cloth, titles stamped in gilt on the spine, red marbled front and rear endpapers, xii, 91 [1] pp., foreword, frontispiece, wonderful illustrations (mostly in color). Foreword by Clay Lockett. Ross Stefan's work is often described as "Southwestern Impressionist", a reduction that takes into account his broad strokes and heightened color palette without considering the proportional accuracy and spatial realism of his landscapes, figures and architectural depictions. Ross Stefan's (1934-1999) scenes of pueblo life and the southern Arizona landscape are still archetypes of the genre, and his legacy is secure as one of the leading Arizona artists of the twentieth century. Fine, bright copy housed in an original matching cloth slipcase with a Stefan etching stamped in gilt on the lower front cover and a small bump to the head of the spine.
