Hard cover dust wrapper, 634pp, colour plates. A little wear to edges of boards and dw, some browning and scuffing of page edges; a good copy. In the wake of Napoleon's disastrous Russian campaign of 1812, the French emperor's imperious grip on Europe began to weaken, raising the question of how the continent was to be reconstructed after his defeat. While the Treaty of Paris that followed Napoleon's exile in 1814 put an end to a quarter century of revolution and war in Europe, it left the future of the continent hanging in the balance. Eager to negotiate a workable and lasting peace, the major powers - Britain, Austria, Prussia, and Russia - along with a host of lesser nations, began a eight-month series of committee sessions in Vienna: these combined political negotiations with balls, dinners, artistic performances, hunts, tournaments, picnics, and other sundry forms of entertainment for the thousands of aristocrats who had gathered in the Austrian capital. Although the Congress of Vienna resulted in an unprecedented level of stability in Europe, the price of peace would be high. Many of the crucial questions were decided on the battlefield or in squalid roadside cottages amid the vagaries of war. And the proceedings in Vienna itself were not as decorous as is usually represented. This work draws on a wide range of original sources, which include not only official documents, private letters, diaries, and firsthand accounts, but also the reports of police spies and informers, to reveal the steamy atmosphere of greed and lust in which the new Europe was forged.

Hardcover. Condition: Very good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very good. First Edition. Signed by Adam Zamoyski on the title page. This sequel to the author's Moscow 1812 (2004) shifts from military to diplomatic affairs surrounding the defeat of Napoleonic France and the disposal of its empire. Thick octavo: xviii, 634 p. with numerous illustrations (some color) and maps. Original black cloth binding, with gilt titles. Mild wear to the corners and tips, with just a hint of edgewear to the dust jacket; else very good or better. From the library of revered English actor, comedian, musician, and writer Eric Idle, accompanied by a letter of provenance. Idle (b.1943) is a founding member of the British comedy troupe Monty Python, as well as the parody rock group The Rutles, and is the writer of the music and lyrics for the hit Broadway musical Spamalot. In a posting for his Eric Idle Online! blog concerning his January and February reading in 2008, Idle wrote: "Almost as long as the Congress of Vienna and at times almost as tiresome, this fulsome account of the dance of the Czars and The Kings of Austria and the rise of the new state of Prussia and the machinations of Metternich and Castlereagh and Talleyrand et al is made up for by the sexual shenanigans and the Balls and the shagging which prove that the Congress of Vienna was indeed a sexual position. A very interesting account of how self interest and personalities dictate foreign policy, which set the stage for the rise of Germany and the eventual horror and devastation of Hitler.".
