Minimal wear; fine in very slightly rubbed dustwrapper (now professionally protected by superior non-adhesive polypropylene film). Postage quoted is for a standard format octavo book. Final charges may vary depending on size and weight. Rembrandt is possibly the best known and most loved of the Old Masters, but little is known definitively of his life. He rose to fame early in his career, only to be passed over and then only fitfully rediscovered for the rest of his days. He reaped a fortune and died in abject poverty, and yet his works are the most valued and coveted pieces of art to be found today. Simon Schama tries to resurrect the life of Rembrandt in this book: he compares and contrasts Rembrandt's life with that of Peter Paul Rubens, with whom Rembrandt was obsessed, showing how the times in which they lived served one painter well while dooming the other. A central theme to this work, is Schama's ability to "read" Rembrandt's self-portraits and to intuit what was taking place in the artist's life and mind, to track Rembrandt's state of mind in relation to the tentpoles of his known chronology, the zeitgeist, and the financial pressures under which he worked. While some have felt that Schama's reading is a little too fanciful in places, what remains is a sumptuous book and some seriously thought-provoking commentary.
