The fourth edition of this work. A biography about the author, poet, and satirist, Jonathan Swift. Swift is best known for his works 'Gulliver's Travels', 'A Modest Proposal', and 'A Tale of a Tub'. He was also a political pamphleteer, and his fictional works were written with an emphasis on satirical political topics. Written by John Boyle, the fifth Earl of Orrery. Boyle was a friend of Swift, and this memoir is comprised of letters Boyle wrote to his son Hamilton Boyle. With a frontispiece of a portrait of Swift, illustrated by B. Wilson. Bookplate to the front pastedown, belonging to a Jolliffe. Prior owner's ink inscription to the recto to the front free endpaper, 'Robert Troyford 1752'. In the original full calf binding. Externally, smart. Light rubbing to the joints and to the extremities, with a patch of rubbing to the top edge of the front board. Small cracks to the head and tail of the spine. Some light marking to the boards. Small surface cracks to the spine. Hinges are strained with cords showing but remain firm. Minor bumping to the extremities. Bookplate to the front pastedown. Front endpaper is lifting and may detach with further handling. Prior owner's ink inscription to the recto to the front free endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are lightly age-toned and clean.
