A good copy of an early edition of this classic of working class life, which remained unpublish ed untill four years after its authors death. It is said that the Dublin born house-painter Robert Noonan took the nom de plume Tressall from his worktable and to avoid being blacklisted by his employers but his attempts at getting the book published were a failure and he died of TB having tried to destroy the manuscript in despair. It was left to his daughter to rescue it and to find a publisher which she did in 1914 through a friend the writer Jessie Pope.Even then it was in a much abridged form and in fact did not appear entirely unexpurgated until 1955. This hardback "shilling " edition published after the Revolution of October 1917 and just before the war ended was the first affordable for the working-class market and was highly influential. It has since been translated into many languages and had 115 UK printings alone including one in braille. Crown 8vo.viii. 234[i] pps. Black publishers cloth lettered white to spine and board. A very sound tidy copy of a poorly produced book.
Hardcover. Condition: Good+. No Jacket. 235pp Early edition of this great working class novel, quite possibly the most widely read book in Britain apart from the bible. Author's name (or rather pseudonym as his real name was Noonan) is mis-spelt as Tressall. Edges are dulled, but otherwise this is a very clean copy. With the stamp of the Reformers' Bookshop, Bradford, on the free front endpaper. No dustwrapper.

Written as the seeds of socialism were beginning to take root in Britain and Labour MPs were first elected to parliament, The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists presents a detailed and critical view of social and economic life in pre war Britain. 12mo. 235pp. Black cloth boards with red titiling. Dust jacked is carefully preserved in plastic slip over archival paper, with some slight loss to top and bottom of spine. Page edges are tanned but binding is tight and square and contents are clean. Rare in this condition with a handsome dust-jacket design. Overall good/very good condition.

First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Fair. First Edition. First edition in what we assume to be library binding. The cover is very worn, & has been exposed to damp, with some offset on the lower corner of the last page, & the very tip of the lower corner of the penultimate page of the book. The outer edge of the page-block is worn & marked, & the binding is very fragile at the first & last pages of the book, although the main body of the book still feels solidly bound. The word 'adult' & a number have been written on the reverse of the front cover, & there is an ownership signature in the upper corner of the rear endpaper. The paper is foxed & marked, & the book has evidently been heavily read, with little tears in the outer margins of a few pages.
