Reliure en demi-veau fauve, dos lisse orné de fleurons et de doubles filets dorés, quelques frottements sur les mors, plats de cartonnage moutarde, gardes et contreplats de papier à la cuve, tranches mouchetées. Coiffe de tête absente (comme il se doit), mors frottés et quelques épidermures. Annotation manuscrite à la plume d'un ancien propriétaire en regard de la page de faux-titre concernant l'auteur : condamné à mort le 24 mars 1794. » Rarissime envoi autographe d'Anacharsis Cloots au révolutionnaire Nicolas Joseph Pâris : « Pour NJ Pâris de la part de l'auteur ». Cet ami de Danton et de Cloots, greffier du Tribunal révolutionnaire de Paris, fut plus connu sous son pseudonyme de Fabricius qu'il emprunta, comme son ami Cloots, à l'histoire des Républiques antiques. L'édition originale de cet ouvrage essentiel d'Anacharsis Cloots, dont les « divers autres écrits ne sont que des parties détachées » (Léonard Gallois, Histoire des Journaux et des journalistes de la Révolution française, 1846) est d'une grande rareté, et nous n'avons pu trouver aucun autre exemplaire enrichi d'un envoi autographe. Notre exemplaire est adressé à un autre révolutionnaire témoin des grands procès de la Terreur qui se rendit célèbre en prévenant Danton du complot de Robespierre et Marat, comme le racontera Victor Hugo dans Quatre-vingt-treize : « C'était le temps où l'expéditionnaire Fabricius Pâris regardait par le trou de la serrure ce que faisait le Comité de salut public. Ce qui, soit dit en passant, ne fut pas inutile, car ce fut Pâris qui avertit Danton la nuit du 30 au 31 mars 1794. » ALLONS ENFANTS DE TOUTES LES PATRIES Penseur révolutionnaire, Cloots est avant tout un penseur de la Révolution. Ce baron allemand dont la condition politique, sociale et économique ne le portait pas naturellement à prendre le parti d'une révolution populaire et bourgeoise, fut pourtant le plus ardent défenseur de l'universalisme porté par la Déclaration des Droits de l'Homme. « Nul, [parmi les Allemands exilés] ne s'est plus senti investi d'une mission philanthropique universelle que Johann Baptist Cloots qui rêvait d'une Internationale républicaine, ouvrant en cela la voie aux grands théoriciens socialistes de la génération suivante, le tailleur Wilhelm Weitling, l'instituteur Friedrich Mäurer, et bien évidemment Karl Marx qui eux aussi connurent l'exil à Paris. » (Thierry Feral, Plaidoyer pour une rénovation du discours historique sur l'Allemagne). Pourtant, comme le note Albert Soboul, « le grand visionnaire que fut ce banquier cosmopolite demeure un incompris de l'histoire. Seul Jaurès, porté par sa chaleur humaine et sa large vision de l'évolution historique, a compris, dans son Histoire socialiste de la Révolution française, ce que les anticipations d'Anacharsis Cloots pouvaient avoir de réaliste : ce grand visionnaire n'était pas un rêveur. » (Soboul Albert. L'ÉTRANGER DE LA FAMILLE En réalité, la progressive suppression de Cloots de l'histoire de la Révolution est assez tardive. En 1792, l'aristocrate prussien prenant fait et cause pour la France des Sans-culottes est une des grandes célébrités de son époque : « Les boutiques de tous les libraires de Paris sont tapissées de ce que les uns appellent les lubies d'Anacharsis, et ce que beaucoup d'autres admirent comme les prophéties d'un sage, d'un véritable ami de l'humanité. » Les journaux s'arrachent ses articles : « C'était même une bonne fortune qu'une lettre ou un discours de Cloots, presque tous remarquables par l'originalité des idées qu'ils renfermaient, par le style, et surtout par sa constance à poursuivre l'objet de tous ses v ux, qui était la Répu (2 p.) 196 pp.
