Paperback. Condition: Very Good. This work considers the situation of all kinds of women, in all aspects of their lives, across the whole of Western Europe over three centuries. Chapters cover female rites of passage - girlhood and work, marriage, married life and work, parenthood and widowhood. It looks in detail at those women who deviated from the norm in some way - the sexually deveiant or unlucky, prostitutes, witches or saints, Protestant and Catholic enthusiasts, women writers, women rioters. This first volume ends in 1800 with the French Revolution. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. Yellow Cloth. Condition: As New. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. First American. Yellow Cloth. As New/Fine. First American. Hardback. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. 636 pages; 21 p. index; 50 p. bibliograph; 46 illustrations; from the dj: "Rich, poor, aristocrat in an Italian palazzo, peasant in a German forest hut or citified wife of a Dutch burgher, a woman's life during these centuries was--as Hufton shows in a portrait both close up and panoramic--shaped in the profoundest sense in the same way. The apparent strength--land, wealth, power and prestige--lay almost exclusively in the hands of men, but Hutton also makes clear just how much men and women worked together and--without thinking of it in those terms, or for the most part being aware of it at all--just how much women were able to influence and control." Book weighs circa 2.4 pounds.

Leinen. Condition: gut. Lizenzausgabe. Huftons berufliche Laufbahn begann 1963 an der University of Leicester.
