Hardcover. Condition: Very Good+. Pirated edition. Limited to 100 copies, this is number 33. This pirated Second Edition follows an 1891 printing of 50 copies. This book is in Very Good+ condition and is lacking a dust jacket. The spine ends and corners of the book covers have some light bumping and beginning wear. The text pages are clean and bright. The endpapers have noticeable generalized foxing. Included is chapter VIII: Literature: Idealistic: Walt Whitman, which gives one of the first elevated discussion of homosexuality in Whitman's work. "John Addington Symonds ( 5 October 1840 19 April 1893) was an English poet and literary critic. A cultural historian, he was known for his work on the Renaissance, as well as numerous biographies of writers and artists. Although he married and had a family, he was an early advocate of male love (homosexuality) , which he believed could include pederastic as well as egalitarian relationships, referring to it as l'amour de l'impossible (love of the impossible). He also wrote much poetry inspired by his homosexual affairs." (from Wikipedia).

8vo, pp. viii, 135; original black cloth, spine lettered in gilt, uncut. Second edition: the first was privately printed for Symonds himself in 1891, two years before his death, in an edition of only fifty copies. This edition, unauthorised, was also supposedly limited, to a hundred copies only, and the present copy is numbered 55. However, it is not so very uncommon and quite a few copies are unnumbered, which leads one to suppose that more than the stated number were in fact printed. Symonds's early life was blighted - perhaps more than that of his famous contemporary Oscar Wilde - on account of his repressed homosexuality, but he eventually came to terms with his condition and wrote two works on the subject. The first, A Problem in Greek Ethics (1883: ten copies only), asked the question of how homosexuality could be allowed in the much-admired society of ancient Greece, and yet be an object of opprobrium in modern Europe; the present work is more scientific and concerns the psychology and sociology of modern homosexuality.

viii, 135 pp. 1 vols. 8vo. Second, pirated edition. One of 100 copies (unnumbered). viii, 135 pp. 1 vols. 8vo. Symonds' groundbreaking essay was first printed privately in 1891, then pirated here. It is "the first 'scientific' psychological-sociological analysis of homosexuality in English, exposing vulgar errors by a well-judged mixture of sarcasm, science, and common sense" (ODNB) Includes a chapter on Walt Whitman; Symonds also published Walt Whitman. A Study (1893). Green cloth. Ex-library, bookplate on front pastedown, small trace of slip removal on lower pastedown. Ink annotations throughout. Very good Second, pirated edition. One of 100 copies (unnumbered).
