Book First Edition Signed
Hardcover. Condition: Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Fair. 1st Edition. First edition, first impression. Undated but 1943 from other bibliographic sources and AUTHOR'S DATED INSCRIPTION on top half title page 'From Private Gollantz and Sergeant Rosenberg to Rosa July 1943'. Sadly unsigned, but hand writing in blue ink compares well with other samples of Naomi Jacob's hand writing. 'Rosa' was probably one of her female lovers. Some edge wear chipping and rubbing to top and bottom of simple black and green wartime jacket and spine, corners rubbed with small loss, folds rubbed, slight lean, some overall fingerprint and time staining, sellotape strips securing spine of jacket (but without usual discolouration), not price clipped (8s 6d, including extra net war costs), no other inscriptions, internally clean and tight, overall an interesting copy for its age and poor wartime paper. 176pp. Naomi Jacob wrote seven Gollantz novels (of which this is the fifth), about the adventures of a Jewish family in Yorkshire before and during WWII. Naomi Eleanor Clare Jacob (1884-1964), Anglo Jewish romantic novelist. Although this is a love story set in Yorkshire during the War, her novels often tackle the issue of prejudice against Jews, domestic violence and the political consequences of Pogroms in the nineteenth century. Many of her books were written before and during the Second World War and were based on the experiences of her paternal family who escaped violence in Western Prussia. Although not well known nowadays, in her day Naomi Jacob was a well loved and respected figure despite her eccentric manner. Her relationships with other women were an open secret but never publicly disclosed during her lifetime. Scarce inscribed. Inscribed by Author(s).
