In 1864, the author served at Camp Morton, near Indianapolis, then one of the largest prisons for rebels in the North. In the winter of 1865, he was captured at the battle of Fort Stedman and confined in Libby Prison at Richmond. This is one of a very small number of accounts that, based on first hand experience, describe life in both Northern and Southern prisons. Illustrated with 10 plates -- photographs from 3 prisons (Camp Morton, Libby, and Danville) from 1864 and 1865, a garrison flag, prison key, prison order book, C.S.A prisoner letter, etc. Tissue-guarded frontispiece. The author provides eye-witness descriptions of the prisons, treatment of prisoners, daily rations, supplies, conduct of officers and guards (including gross negligence), available medical treatment, barracks conditions, escapes, differences in Union and Confederate prison policies, cases of suffering and destitution, etc. Subtitle: "Reprinted from the Report of an Address Delivered before the New York Commandery of the Military Order of the Loyal Legion, February 1, 1911."
