Book
Green Cloth Hardback. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. Seventh Impression. 1952. Seventh impression. viii, 139pp. Clive Staples Lewis (1898-1963) is probably best known as the author of The Screwtape Letters and The Chronicles of Narnia, but he also wrote many other works. A Preface to Paradise Lost is one of his most famous scholarly works, and had its genesis in Lewis's Ballard Matthews Lectures which he delivered at the University College of North Wales in 1941. The book is bound in the original green cloth covered boards with gold titling on the spine. The case of the book is in very good condition. The contents are tight and clean with partial offsetting to the free endpapers and a light water stain near the bottom corner of the fore edge of the text block. There is no inscription. The dustwrapper has shelf wear with light soiling and small pieces are missing from the corner tips and spine ends. The bottom corner of the front flap is clipped but beside the clip is a printed publisher's price of 9s. 6d. Net.

Book First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. First Edition. A seventh impression of the true first edition, published in 1952. The book was originally published during the Second World War in 1942. With a two-page Dedication to Charles Williams written by C. S. Lewis. ***Near fine in light-green cloth-covered boards with gilt titles to the spine. The gilt is still beautifully bright, having been protected by the dustwrapper. Head and tail of spine virtually uncreased. Corners sharp. The boards are wonderfully clean and unmarked. The page block edges are nice and clean without any of the usual foxing. There is no reading lean to the binding. Spine tight. Internally also near fine with neat ownership name and date on the front free endpaper, but no other annotations. The paper stock is clean and is much whiter than is usually found for this book (which is normally found with tanned paper stock). Some offsetting to the endpapers. No tears or creasing. ***In a very good green and white printed dustwrapper, which has not been price-clipped, retaining the original publisher's printed price of 8s. 6d. net. The dustwrapper is virtually complete, with just very slight loss at the top and tail of the spine. There is no other loss, and none of the rubbing, creasing and tears to the extremities that is usually found with this book. The white areas of the dustwrapper have turned cream with age, and are moderately foxed and browned (please see scans). ***140 pages with a three-page Index at the back of the book. 187mm x 130mm. ***Contents: Dedication, I. Epic Poetry, II. Is Criticism Possible?, III. Primary Epic, IV. The Technique of Primary Epic, V. The Subject of Primary Epic, VI. Virgil and the Subject of Secondary Epic, VII. The Style of Secondary Epic, VIII. Defence of this Style, IX. The Doctrine of the Unchanging Human Heart, X. Milton and St Augustine, XI. Hierarchy, XII. The Theology of Paradise Lost, XIII. Satan, XIV. Satan's Followers, XV. The Mistake about Milton's Angels, XVI. Adam and Eve, XVII. Unfallen Sexuality, XVIII. The Fall, XIX. Conclusion, Appendix, Index. ***'This book is called a Preface because its main purpose is to remove those obstacles to the enjoyment of "Paradise Lost" which have recently been accumulating. It is therefore much concerned with preliminaries--with the possibility of criticism, the nature of epic, the theology and pneumatology of the poem, and, above all, the Hierarchical Principle. As regards the content of "Paradise Lost", the author has found it his chief duty to encourage simplicity and restore the belief that Milton may, after all, have hated what he displays as hateful. The defence of its form resolves itself into a plea that ritual, and splendour, and joy itself, have a right to exist.' (Quote taken from the front flap of the dustwrapper). ***Seventh impression of the true first edition, complete in its original dustwrapper. Copies of this book in their original dustwrappers are hard to find now. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.
