Revised edition, first impression, presentation copy, inscribed on the half-title, "F. H. P. Knight, from C. S. Lewis, Xmas 1943". Lewis, who infrequently presented books, valued Knight's opinions on literature and occasionally sent Knight his works for critiques. They also discussed their shared love for the miraculous and the fantastic as fellow Christians and science fiction fans. Francis H. P. Knight (born c.1886) was a member of the British Interplanetary Society, the oldest existing organization promoting space exploration. The American science fiction magazine Amazing Stories and the British fanzine Novae Terrae (later New Worlds) both published his letters to the editors. In December 1938, Novae Terrae printed a notice that "SFA-member F. H. P. Knight is exchanging letters with C. S. Lewis, author of new hit s-f novel Out of the Silent Planet". Lewis replied to Knight's 1938 letter regarding that title. "Another thing I learn [from what you wrote] is that my sales are likely to be small since most 'S-F-Fans' are clearly ante[sic]-Christian and most Christians are not space fans!". Lewis also wrote to Knight: "It is always very pleasant to find that one's book has been liked - specially by a fellow Christian and fellow Churchman". Knight's sustained interest in Lewis spilled over into his correspondence with other Christians. Loosely inserted is a three-page handwritten letter to Knight from Rev. Stephen James Cunnington Goldsack (1868-1957), who thanks Knight for loaning him this copy and reflects on his experience of reading it. Goldsack was a devotee of the Swedish theologian Emanuel Swedenborg and the author of the prayer book Incense of Lowliness (1946). The Pilgrim's Regress (1933) was Lewis's first published work of prose fiction and his third book overall. Following the model of John Bunyan's The Pilgrim's Progress (1678), Lewis's book offers a modern and personal allegory of his conversion to Christianity. This copy is from the third edition, revised with a new preface by Lewis explaining his intentions for the work. C. S. Lewis correspondence with Francis Knight sold by Peter Harrington, stock no. 170266. Octavo. Original green cloth, paper spine label, top edge green, map front endpapers. With supplied dust jacket. Spine cocked, a little rubbing, lower extremities slightly bumped; slight soiling to unclipped jacket, spine toned, small wear to spine ends: a very good copy in like jacket.

Revised edition, first impression, presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the half-title, "F. S. Goffin, from C. S. Lewis, in memory of several pleasant and not unadventurous voyages, Oct. 1943". The recipient was Frederick Stanley Goffin (1889-1984), a schoolmaster and organist who lived on Botley Road in Oxford in the 1930s and 40s. The book was inscribed while Lewis was a fellow at Magdalen College, though the nature of his relationship with Goffin, and of their travels together, has proven elusive. First published in 1933, The Pilgrim's Regress was Lewis's first published work of prose fiction and his third book overall. Following the model of John Bunyan's The Pilgrim's Progress (1678), it offers a modern and personal allegory of his conversion to Christianity. This is the third edition, extensively revised by Lewis with a new preface explaining his intentions for the work. Provenance: from the collection of the Rolling Stones drummer Charlie Watts (1941-2021), with his posthumous bookplate on the front free endpaper verso. Octavo. Original green cloth, paper spine label printed in black and green, top edge green, map front endpapers. With supplied dust jacket. Lightly rubbed, occasional small marks to cloth and contents; unclipped jacket a little rubbed, a few small nicks and creases to extremities: a very good copy in near-fine jacket.
