First Edition
FIRST EDITION. Half title. Orig. red cloth. Red & black pictorial d.w., unclipped; a little rubbed & chipped. Ownership inscription of Kevin J. Whitty on leading pastedown & Malcolm S. Chase on leading f.e.p. Dustjacket by Stein. Lodge's first novel uses a South London cinema to explore the nature of religious belief. D.J. Taylor wrote forgivingly of its 'tyro gaucheries' and 'the quality of its writing' and its 'absorption in a bygone way of life'.
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. 1st Edition. First Edition (first printing). 8vo. 237pp. Red boards lettered in gold at the spine. Top edge spotted and with a little further light spotting to the fore edge, free endpapers and pastedowns. A trace of partial browning to one preliminary leaf, and a sliver of discolouration of the cloth at the head of the backstrip where the dust wrapper defective. A very good copy in the handsome non-price-clipped pictorial dust wrapper designed by Stein, with some fading to the publisher's red spine panel colouring and a little further fading to the margins of the front panel, and with some unsightly splashes of staining to the rear panel, and some nicking with several tiny fractions of loss from the had of the spine panel. A nice crisp copy of the author's debut novel.

Book Signed
Four reprints, 3 paperbacks and one hardback. From the library of David Lodge, the 1962 first Pan paperback edition, signed by Lodge in black ink to the half-title page, a Chivers Press hardback first thus with Lodge's name and address label to the inside front board and minor ink corrections to the text, a 1993 first Penguin edition with a new introduction by Lodge, signed by him in black ink to the half-title page and with 5 cards of handwritten notes regarding the novel loosely inserted, possibly written for a talk or when Lodge was writing his memoirs. There is also a duplicate 1993 first Penguin edition, signed by Lodge in ink to the title page, the location of the signature probably indicating that the book was meant for presentation but never made it to the intended recipient. All books are firmly bound, with slightly sunned spines, the paperbacks are slightly creased, rubbed and stained, the hardback in generally better condition. An interesting group of reprints of Lodge's first novel, showing his continued interaction with the text over the decades.

Book First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. David Lodge's first novel. The text block is square and tight; the black cloth-bound boards have no bumps, dents or scratches and their edges and corners are all sharp. No spine lean. The edges of the text block are clean and unmarked. Internally the pages are spotless apart from a pencilled note on the ffep of a previous re-sale price, the date of publication and the fact that the book is a 1st edition. The colours of the dust jacket illustration (by Stein) are strong and clear on the front panel but somewhat faded on the spine. The publisher's original price (15s net) is still where it should be. There are some closed tears (all neatly and inconspicuously repaired) along the top edge and a cup ring stain on the back panel. The dj is in a protective cover. See five photos of this book.

Pleasure/at receiving kind letters like your own is mingled/with a rueful awareness that one is unlikely to/be able to repeat the trick.//Yours sincerely,//David Lodge". The letter has had the margins trimmed and is mounted on a card. The book itself is also signed on the title page by David Lodge. Signed by Author(s).
