Mass Market Paperback. Condition: Very Good. 1st Published: 1958. 424 pp. A rare, hard-to-find, out-of-print, scarce, true collectible gem! A wonderful copy! Solidly bound copy with moderate overall wear and use. Copy with crisp pages and clean text. Moderate foxing on page edges, not affecting text. Synopsis: This is a good moment for putting together an anthology of Italian poetry. Today we are beginning to see the importance of Italy?s living poets, because the best of these are older men who have already given us a substantial body of works. We can look at the achievement-to-date of Eugenio Montale, of Giuseppe Ungaretti, of Salvatore Quasimodo, against the background of all Italian poetry, and their contribution in turn throws a new light on what has gone before. The river has taken another bend. From this point the whole course looks different. Montale?s new volume La bufera e altro is being put out in the bookshops, and I remember with gratitude that, thanks to the poet?s kindness in lending me a typescript, I have managed to include something from these recentusime in the present collection. So this book really grows from its last part of all. It is modern taste and modern questionings which have determined my selection. Similarly it has been in translating the works of the last forty years (reputedly so difficult, though the essays, or rather articles, written to illustrate this are much more obscure) that I have learned how far a literal translator of poetry can help the reader with small knowledge of the language. He reports faithfully, he may at times be obliged to choose one interpretation rather than another, but he should stop short of explanation. Again, however cleanly he may deliver the poet?s meaning into. his own tongue, he does not pretend to transmit to the understanding the poetic shock with which his original is charged. These translations, then, should serve to make Italy?s lyric wealth accessible to all who value poetry; and to those who are already acquainted with the various Rime.
