First Edition
First edition. In four volumes. List of subscriber's to part IV. With half-titles and 29 engraved plates by W. B. & Geo. Cooke, from drawings by F. L. Chantrey. Extra-illustrated throughout with 72 engravings, lithographs, aquatints, pencil sketches, and watercolours (mainly mounted on interleaves), predominantly extracted from contemporary publications. Later red half-calf, red cloth boards, tooled in gilt and blind, contrasting green morocco lettering-piece. Lightly rubbed, marked, and sunned. Booksellers tickets of the Loxley Brothers, Sheffield to all FEPs, book-labels of Cecil H. Wilson to all FFEPs, scattered spotting. A complete, profusely extra-illustrated, set of this picturesque survey of Derbyshire, compiled by Sheffield-based cutler and topographer Ebenezer Rhodes (1762-1839), illustrated with copper-plate engravings after pencil drawings by Sir Francis Chantrey (which were later republished separately). Rhodes followed this effort with Yorkshire Scenery (1826), of which only the first part was published, and Derbyshire Tourist's Guide and Travelling Companion (1837). All his books involved him in financial loss, exacerbating his already precarious financial state. In 1828, when his cutlery business failed, he became bankrupt. Thereafter, Chantrey privately gave Rhodes £50 a year, acknowledging that Rhodes had been one of his earliest patrons when he himself was struggling for recognition. Rhodes continued to make a small income preparing steel plates for engravers. Size: Quarto.
