The boards have a patch of fading with some dark marks on it at the top right corner of the rear panel. Page edges lightly browned with some spotting. Previous owners' bookplate to the front pastedown. Owner's name across front free endpaper in ink with a date. Spotting to endpapers and the first and last few pages. The pages are otherwise generally unmarked. The jacket has a quarter inch chip out of the top corner of the rear panel and the spine is browned with some chipping at the top and bottom. Fading and staining to the front and rear panels and the top edge of the rear panel has a half inch closed tear and some dark marking. First printing of the Gollancz edition.

Dame Ivy Compton-Burnett (1884-1969) was an English novelist. She was awarded the 1955 James Tait Black Memorial Prize for her novel 'Mother and Son'. Her works consist mainly of dialogue and focus on family life among the late Victorian or Edwardian upper middle class. Boards lightly speckled but overall in very good condition Top edge slightly dusty. Previous owner's name to top of ffep. Price clipped dust jacket in very good condition with just light wear. The dustwrapper is in an easily removed clear plastic protective cover.
