Item Description: London: for Rivington Davis White etc, 1790. In two volumes, both uniform in fairly well rubbed full leather bindings, with small marks on spine which would appear to correspond with 'Gymnasium Oldenburg' stamps to title pages, assumedly some lending institution. Inked sentimental inscription inside front boards of each. Generally good+ copies, especially so for their age, with some wear to spine ends, and edges, and maybe a little fragile.but all intact at the moment. 510 pp and 467 pp but very large amount of index end of volume 2. Portrait frontis to volume 1. Heavy parcel so postage likely extra outside the UK. 8vo. Both volumes have small parts of original leather spine titles remaining. Bookseller Inventory # 25323

Item Description: Birmingham: printed by John Baskerville for J. and R. Tonson in London, 1759. Second Baskerville editions. 2 vols. 4to., pp. [viii], lxxii, 416; [ii], 390 + portrait frontispiece to vol.I. Vol. II title-page is the cancellans with ‘Samson’ corrected, with the usual errors in pagination after p.245. Faint but profuse foxing. To vol.II: a few light pencil annotations, occasional faint tidemarks, scatterings of dusty marks pp.284-9. Contemporary speckled calf , neatly rebacked by Chris Weston with raised bands, black and red morocco gilt spine labels, corners repaired, gilt dentelles, marbled endpapers. Edges worn and a little chipped, a few scuffs and scratches but still very good overall. Warrington Museum and Library stamps to: vol.I frontispiece (both sides), title-page, half-title, p.i, p.3; vol.II title-page, p.5. Paradise Lost has the occasionally-found frontispiece, signed Miller. This was supplied by Tonson, sometimes with 12 further plates, who distributed several versions of the designs. Paradise Regain’d is without plates as is usual, though copies can occasionally be found with a frontispiece and set of five plates, again supplied by Tonson. These volumes offer an example of Baskerville’s paper innovations: ‘Several sheets of Baskerville's edition of Virgil (1757) were printed on a ‘wove’ paper without a watermark, and this remains the first known use of such paper [.] its invention was subsequently sometimes attributed to Baskerville, but it was probably invented by James Whatman of Kent. Similar paper is used in Baskerville's quarto edition of Milton (1759) and his edition of Dodsley's Select Fables (1761) [.] these are the only three titles for which he used wove paper [.]’ (ODNB).
