From the Preface, "In the spring of 1896 I went into northwestern Montana as a member of a Government expedition . to recommend a national policy for the United States Forest Reserves. " The contents of this book is about the author's next "fifteen years' close association with the old Blackfoot chiefs, medicine men, and common people." The top and bottom edges of the spine strip and the boards' front corners are a little frayed. Some of the cover's extremities have color loss from shelf wear. The top end of the text block is brown, but is mottled with light spots. The front free endpaper is missing. A few pages' front edges remain uncut. The pages have a moderate, musty odor.
