Book First Edition
Cloth. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. Ley Kenyon (illustrator). FIRST EDITION & FIRST PRINTING. This Book Is Recommended by The Book Society - full astonishing story of the packed nine-hour drama that took place as the "unsinkable" Titanic died in the freezing North Atlantic of 1912. without a doubt this is one of the great news-stories of modern history, and it has found it's true chronicler in Walter Lord. There is a very interesting foreword to the book, which states: In 1898 a struggling author named Morgan Robertson concocted a novel about a fabulous Atlantic liner, far larger than any that had ever been built. Robertson loaded his ship with rich and complacent people and then wrecked it one cold April night on an iceberg. This somehow showed the futility of everything, and in fact, the book was called 'Futility' when it appeared that year, published by the firm of M.F. Mansfield. - Fourteen years later a British shipping company named the White Star Line built a steamer remarkably like the one in Robertson's novel. The new liner was 66,000 tons displacement; Robertson's was 70,000 tons. The real ship was 882.5 feet long; the fictional one was 800 feet. Both vessels were triple screw and could make 24-25 knots. Both could carry about 3000 people, and both had enough lifeboats for only a fraction of this number. But, then, this didn't seem to matter because both were labelled "unsinkable". On April 10, 1912, the real ship left Southampton on her maiden voyage to New York. Her cargo included a priceless copy of The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam and a list of passengers collectively worth 250 million dollars. On her way over she too struck an iceberg and went down on a cold April night. Robertson called his ship the Titan; the White Star Line called its ship the Titanic. This is the story of her last night and that's just the foreword! - BOOK DESCRIPTION: - The original dustjacket, designed by Ley Kenyon accompanies this amazing book. Retains price of 16/- NET to the inner prelim. Creased and browned to extremities with closed edge tears. The creases which were white have been coloured in various blue ink to make it look better. Now housed in a removable plastic archival sleeve for future protection. Navy blue cloth boards with a black leather label to the spine which has title and author name in gold gilt lettering, which has partially faded. Boards are clean. Overall, a nice clean condition and firmly bound to the inner page block. The contents of this book are just amazing. This guy has certainly done a lot of work. It took him over 20 years to compile this masterpiece. There are numerous images within the book. I have overdone it a bit with the accompanying images but I really wanted to convey to you how detailed the work actually is. It's a marvelous account of one of the most remembered disasters of the 20th century. The imagery begins at the end pages, both front and rear, which depict 'Boat Deck and Tank Top [bottom deck] of R.M.S. TITANIC. Browning to endpages front and rear, otherwise the pages are very clean throughout. There are 188 pages and these are all tightly bound. There is a complete list of all the passengers covering 9 pages. There is a very detailed and comprehensive index to the rear of the book. PLUS BONUS: The Daily Graphic [newspaper]- APRIL 20, 1912. HEADLINE: TITANIC : IN MEMORIAM ~ NUMBER -8 PAGES IN TOTAL. [this is a modern facsimile of the original newspaper] There is a copy of the Telegram which signaled the beginning of the end of the Titanic: 'We have struck iceberg sinking fast' was a message too late for 1,517 lost souls. - Sheet music played by the band as the evacuation was in progress. - A letter from the General Workers Union, criticizing lifeboat priority according to first class passengers There is also a large sheet called: Transcript of Register for Transmission to Register-General of Shipping and Seamen. This has red handwriting across the middle which states that The Titanic was wrecked in the Atlantic Ocean 14th April 1912. the certificate of Registry was lost with the vessel.

THE GENTLEMAN I PURCHASED THIS BOOK FROM STATED ROBERT FORREST WAS AN INTIMATE FRIEND OF WALTER'S. WALTER NEVER MARRIED. And, from looking online at other references to Walter Lord and Robert Forrest, an item on Worthpoint (I'm attaching a screen shot) includes this: "[Lord and Forrest] were Titanic enthusiasts and collectors, who contributed to various publications concerning the ill-fated ship." Walter Lord's papers relating to the Titanic in the Lord-MacQuitty Collection at the Royal Museums Greenwich: Walter Lord bequeathed his collection to the National Maritime Museum in 2002, encouraged by his close friend William Macquitty, the producer of 'A Night to Remember'. The collection also includes items previously owned by William Macquitty. William MacQuitty (15 May 1905 5 February 2004) was born in Belfast. He was six when he watched the launch of the TITANIC on 30 May 1911, and saw her set sail on her fateful maiden voyage a year later. During the Second World War he worked in film production for the Ministry of Information but it was only in the 1950s that his interest in the TITANIC was rekindled. His wife had been reading Lord's 'A Night to Remember' and he realised that this was the film he had been waiting for. He took an option on the film rights, met Walter Lord, and together they developed a screenplay based on the book. MacQuitty then produced the film, also called 'A Night to Remember' (directed by Roy Ward Baker) and following its success won a contract for the Independent Television Authority's franchise for Ulster.
