First Edition. 8vo, period calf, morocco spine label, viii, 335 pp. Ex-library copy, bookplate of Hobart College on front and rear pastedowns, rubber stamp of Antiquarian Society, Worchester , Mass on title page, joints cracked and hinges very weak, binding with wear to extremities, dent in spine by label, some internal foxing and soiling, front endpaper a little torn; otherwise in pretty good shape. Samuel Deane (1733-1814) was a writer and clergyman, who was born in Dedham, Massachusetts. While a strong supporter of the American Revolution, he ran into some problems with his congregation for his criticism of the pacific tendencies of the Quakers. After the war he turned his attention the science of agriculture, and published "The New England Farmer. " in 1790. He includes elaborate definitions of many agricultural terms. His definition of oak goes on for almost two pages, and many obscure terms are also included. Sabin indicates this is "The first work of the kind published in this country The work is from the presses of Isaiah Thomas. Sabin 19056. ANB.
