SYNOPSIS: Professor J. D. B. Miller contends in this book that politics is a basic human activity. He writes: "If we are to understand politics, we must recognize that it consists of conflict (sometimes moderate, sometimes extreme) over the use of government; that this conflict is engendered by the many forms of diversity of condition, status and opportunity which exist; and that this is a permanent condition of mankind. It follows that there will always be politics of some kind or another." In a clear and penetrating analysis of his subject Professor Miller examines both the "why" and the "how" of politics and shows how interest, institutions, and ideas operate to produce political results. John Donald Bruce Miller was born near Sydney in 1922. At the age of sixteen he was working in a bank, and attending university courses in economics in the evenings. Six months later he joined the Australian Broadcasting Commission as an announcer. By 1944 he had received his degree from the University of Sydney, and in 1946 he left broadcasting to launch himself into an academic career. Professor Miller has taught at the London School of Economics; and, from 1957-62, at the University of Leicester. While there he spent terms as a Visiting Professor at both the Indian School of International Studies in New Delhi and Columbia University in New York. He returned to Australia in 1962, and is now Professor of International Relations at the Australian National University in Canberra. He edits Australian Outlook and has contributed to two symposia on international relations. Among his other publications are Australian Government and Politics and The Commonwealth in the World. Size: 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall.
