Green Cloth. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good Minus. 1st Edition. 256pp. 1956. First edition. 8vo. sized. A very good, clean, tight copy in a very good minus jacket. Original publisher's green boards - gilt embossed to the spine. Upper edge dyed green as it should be. Nothing but Rupert Hart-Davis to the title page/copyright page so not a Book Society published edition. It does have a strip of paper pasted over the price to the front flap of the jacket, which states: Book Society Choice 16s net'. This was clearly added at a later date. No inscriptions. The lower two board corners a little bumped and the upper two board corners a little turned in. Light bumps to the head and tail of the spine. The jacket remains very bright. It does however have a couple of open tears to the head of the spine and a couple of 3cm long tears which have been repaired with acid-free archival tape to the verso. There is slight loss too, to several corners of the jacket. A very good first edition copy in a very good minus bright, clean jacket.

Gift inscription to the flyleaf dated Christmas 1956. Tiny doodle (half inch long) to margin of one prelim page, otherwise clean and sound. Internally the book is free of foxing but has the usual light tanning to the pages. The bright jacket is now protected by a transparent sleeve, shows minor losses at the top and bottom of the spine and at the corner folds with a single (one inch) closed tear to the base of the front panel. Text block shows some darkening to the top edge and some minor spots to the front edge. Overall, a collectable copy of this modern classic at a modest price. All proceeds of sale go to LOROS, a Hospice Charity serving Leicestershire and Rutland.
