Condition: Near Fine. Collection of music related materials and recordings, books and manuscripts, photographs and associated ephemera from the library of Phillip Ramey, a close friend and colleague of Paul Bowles, with more than 30 items Signed or Inscribed by Bowles. Most of the material dates from the 1990s: notably from 1995 when Bowles made his final return to New York City and participated in a festival at Lincoln Center celebrating his music, and a related symposium on his literary works and music. From 1997-98 Ramey served as the liaison to Bowles during the making of the film *Night Waltz: The Music of Paul Bowles*. Phillip Ramey, a prominent composer and pianist, was a longtime collaborator with Bowles and kept an apartment in Tangier. Included in the collection are several typed and handwritten notes by Bowles, together with books, programs, and associated pieces of printed ephemera inscribed or signed by Bowles. Also notable are 40 color photographs of Bowles in New York City and Tangiers dating from the mid-1990s (included are snapshots of Bowles with Mario Vargas Llosa, Rodrigo Rey Rosa, Karim Jihad Achouatte, and several other artists), a series of seven cassette recordings of Paul Bowles music made by Ramey, and a 1950 vinyl record (of Bowles *Concerto for Two Pianos, Winds and Percussion*) Inscribed by the pianists Arthur Gold and Robert Fizdale, and additionally Signed by Bowles. Among the manuscripts are several notes by Bowles intended for inclusion in Cherie Nutting's book *Yesterday's Perfume: An Intimate Memoir of Paul Bowles* in which he makes pithy observations about friends and fellow artists, and other miscellaneous and random notes in which he makes critical remarks about the documentary film *Night Waltz* and other works, especially as it relates to his music. Among the books are two Inscribed to Ramey. An important archive documenting Bowles activities and interests during the last decade of his life. A detailed list of the collection is available.
