circa 22 x 13,6 cm. 206 pp. Original wrapper with the printed label to the spine "Querard II, 152. One of several editions in 1816 that were seized and destroyed as there political position angered Louis XVIII. The title here still calls the author "Ministre d'Etat" which was removed from subsequent editions as Chateaubriand (1768-1848) lost his position due to the opinions expressed. He favoured a constitutional monarchy with liberal as well as conservative elements. In his memoirs later on he was to say about the work: "Cette publication a été une des grandes époques de ma vie politique". - There is another edition with Le Normant the same year that has 304 pages and it does not seem to be quite clear which one is the first. - Fine and authentic copy in the first wrapper with the original printed label to the spine, uncut, just very slightly dusty but else crisp. Small older Swiss bookplate to inner cover. ".

The author's principal political essay, reprinted in the same year as the Paris original. With his publication of 'De Buonaparte et des Bourbons' in 1814 in favour of a Bourbon restoration Chateaubriand (1768-1848) had greatly helped the royalist cause and was rewarded with a peerage and the ministry of the interior. After two years of reflection in office he wrote the present treatise in defence of the constitutional monarchy and liberty of the press, but expressly rejecting any return to the absolutism of the ancien regime. This declaration of liberalism cost him his ministerial post and pension, and he had to sell his house and library.
